Part of a series of factsheets and practical guides for conducting participatory variety evaluation with farmers. The series is focused on evaluating sorghum and pearl millet varieties but contains advice that would be helpful for a range of participatory research projects. It includes methods for identifying priority evaluation criteria with farmers, as well as different options for documenting farmers choices and evaluations.
This factsheet focuses on identifying and understanding farmers' criteria for evaluating variety trials, and gives guidance for working with them prioritising and reducing the number of criteria - a step which becomes important when working with larger numbers of farmers.
Also included in the English translation is an example of a data collection sheet for taking notes during the discussion about characteristics to be used for variety evaluation.
Produced with the involvement of the following organisations: AMSP, AOPP, CIRAD, COPROSEM, ICRISAT, IER Institut d'Econmie Rurale, INERA, UGCPA, Union Locale des producteurs de Cereales de Dioila
Note: This resource was added to this database as part of a migration of resources from the now defunct CCRP Sphaera platform, and is still awaiting a comprehensive review and quality check.
