Despite growing evidence of agroecology’s benefits in Africa, its viability remains debated. This paper outlines seven methodological challenges faced when assessing agroecology in 11 African case studies, including defining practices, choosing assessment scales, balancing subjective versus objective views, using qualitative or quantitative methods, and handling site-specific differences. The authors recommend a multicriteria, systemic, and farmer-centered assessment approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data to better capture practices within farming systems.
