From the introduction:
"This booklet is about ideas needed to devise an intelligent sampling plan, and is not a cookbook. We are concerned with basic, widely useful concepts. Our aim is to present general principles for achieving good, defensible sampling practice, by the systematic application of common sense rather than mathematics. When committing resources, sampling is often a crucial stage. If possible, checking with an understanding statistician may improve efficiency and effectiveness at this point; the booklet defines some of what a statistician would like you to think about before discussing your work setting in more detail."
Part of a series of statistical guides by The University of Reading Statistical Services Centre, which were originally written as part of a contract with DFID to give guidance to research and support staff working on DFID Natural Resources projects. They provide guidelines for staff involved in the development and presentation of research projects. The guidelines are intended to help researchers to identify their biometric or statistical needs.
