Monitoring Systems Change: A Guide to Involving Farmers and Communities

Available Languages:

Description

Dated: October 2025

Authors: Nuru Kipato , Jane Poole

This guide is designed to support the process of engaging with communities and others to co-develop the monitoring of systems changes within their landscapes. The process envisaged is based on focus group discussions (FGDs). It may be used by CRFS projects or others to guide FGD discussions with communities for monitoring community or landscape system changes. It may be used at the start of a project, during a project or as a community activity independent from a specific project.

The guide was developed by CRFS participants through a series of interactions and joint learning on monitoring systems change. This included a face-to-face workshop in Kenya where CRFS projects, the E&S Africa regional team and the Research Methods Support (RMS) project developed and piloted a process for the co-development and negotiation of relevant systems change indicators, their measurement and data use by farmers, other stakeholders and their communities.
